How to complete your character card collection!

Part of the swag pack for THE BROKEN ONES preorder campaign was three of the eight Malediction Character Cards designed by Erika (@thenocturnalfey). I’ve had some giveaways that have allowed people to complete their collections, but I’ve received quite a few messages from people wanting to know how to get the rest of the cards! After much careful thought, I’ve decided to offer up packages that include five character cards to readers who write an HONEST review of THE BROKEN ONES on a RETAILER SITE (B&N, Indigo, Waterstones, Am*zon, etc. Goodreads is not a retailer site, although it would be awesome if you posted your review there, too).

By honest review, I mean your ACTUAL opinion on THE BROKEN ONES, whether that be a one star review or a five star review. How you rate the book has no impact on whether you will get the character cards, so don’t feel like you need to butter me up 😉

Why do reviews matter? The quantity of reviews on retailer sites impact how the novel is treated by the retailer’s recommendation algorithm. For that big online retailer where most of you like to buy your books, 50 reviews is the magic number for a novel to be recommended to readers. So in order for THE BROKEN ONES to be recommended to those readers who have purchased STOLEN SONGBIRD, it needs to have 50 reviews. I think you can all appreciate why I’d want that to be happening.

How to claim your five character cards:

  1. Post an HONEST review on at least one RETAILER site. It doesn’t have to be long, only a sentence or two saying what you liked or didn’t like about the book.
  2. Email me at with the subject line: Complete My Collection. Your email should include the following: your full name and mailing address, a list of the five cards you want (Choices are: Cecile, Tristan, Penelope, Marc, the Twins, Anais, Chris, or Angouleme), and the link to your HONEST review.
  3. Wait next to your mailbox for your envelope to arrive 🙂

~ The offer is open internationally
~ The offer ends August 15, 2017
~ The offer is open to everyone, not just those who preordered

A huge thanks to everyone who has bought THE BROKEN ONES, or any of my books. You are the best <333

Character Portrait Reveals!

I’m so excited that today is finally here! Not only are the prologue and 1st chapter of THE BROKEN ONES available to read on The YA Book Traveler, you can also head over to Instagram to check out the first character portrait reveal via @pagewithaview, who has kicked off the campaign with the lovely Cécile!

I’ve been working for the past couple months with a super-talented young artist named Erika E., who many of you know as @thenocturnalfey, to design the artwork for character trading cards. The portraits are all original watercolor, and they are GORGEOUS. I met Erika a couple years ago during the HIDDEN HUNTRESS fan art contest and, having seen her watercolors of Cécile and Tristan, I knew I wanted to work with her on this project.

Pénélope, one of the main characters of THE BROKEN ONES, is an artist, and her art features heavily in the novel. For that reason, it was really important to me that the artwork I commissioned be traditional rather than digital. Sometimes that presented us with some challenges, but it was absolutely worth it in the end!

The portraits will be revealed by an amazing group of bookstagrammers over the next couple weeks, and I can’t wait to see the photos they come up with. You can check out the reveals by following the hashtag #maledictioncharacter on Instagram, or you can use the schedule below.

So how do you get your hands on these beauties? By preordering THE BROKEN ONES now! I have only a limited number of character cards printed, and they are exclusively available to those who preorder (details here), although I’ll run a few giveaways after release day for people hoping to complete their collection 🙂

As many of you know, preorders are really important as they demonstrate reader interest in a novel to both the publisher and the retailers. As a thank you to readers who have chosen to preorder THE BROKEN ONES, I’m giving away swag packs (while quantities last). This is something I’ve done for prior novels, but this time THERE’S MORE!

I’ve been hard at work with an artist and blogger named Erika, who many of you know as The Nocturnal Fey, to create original portraits of many of my characters. I’m having these portraits printed out on trading cards, and I’ll be including a couple of them in each swag pack! Please keep an eye on social media for the reveal of each image, along with teasers from the novel.

If you have preordered THE BROKEN ONES, please email me proof of purchase (photo, email forward, or scanned image) to (there is an auto-response – please add my email address to your contacts and check your junk folder if it doesn’t show up. Autoresponders often get flagged as spam) and then PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORM. If you do not fill out the form and email me proof of purchase, I won’t be able to send you your swag pack 🙁

I’m using a form because I’m giving you a bit of choice in what you receive, and also because people always seem to forget to give me certain pieces of necessary information. Like their mailing address 😉

The preorder campaign is open INTERNATIONALLY. I’ll be mailing the swag packs in May & June, but I won’t be sending confirmation of shipping.

The preorder campaign will run for as long as supplies last or until June 5, 2017.

Swag Packs Include:
(1) Bookmark
(1) Signed Bookplate
(3) Three Character Trading Cards
(4) A postcard map of Trollus illustrated by Elise Kova

The Broken Ones (Prequel to The Malediction Trilogy)

Below Forsaken Mountain, a plot is being hatched to overthrow the tyrant king of Trollus, and Marc is the right-hand man of its leader.  His involvement is information more than one troll would kill to possess, which is why he must keep it a secret from everyone, even the girl he loves.

After accidentally ruining her sister’s chance to become queen, Pénélope is given one last opportunity by her father, the Duke d’Angoulême, to make herself useful: she must find proof that the boy she’s in love with is conspiring against the crown. If she fails, her life will be forfeit.

Marc and Pénélope must navigate the complex politics of Trollus, where powers on all sides are intent on using them as pawns, forcing them to risk everything for a chance at a life together.

Except being together may turn out to be the greatest risk of all.
